Newspaper obituaries provide a comprehensive portrait of this family, who originated from Frankenhausen and the surrounding area and settled in Northern California. The focus is on family cohesion until the death of the head of the family, Gunther Frederick Schroter, in 1905, the regional ties to Shasta County, and the professions, life paths, and social roles of the children. A special aspect is the influence of Freemasonry on the choice of burial site, the Shasta Masonic Cemetery. (OpenAI adapted)

Arthur Alvin (1861-1832) Sattler in Shasta

Otto Paul (1863-1925) Sattler in Shasta

The end came at the home of his daughter Mrs George Strode and in the presence of all but two of his children.

His death was not unexpected. For a year past he had been failing fast, and for the past nine weeks he had been bedfast. In the hope that a surgical operation might relieve him of the Cancer from which he suffered, he was taken to San Francisco and placed in a hospital. Learning that an operation would probably prove fatal, owing to his advanced years, he requested to be conveyed to Shasta, where he could die in the old home he loved so well. – He returned to Redding last Monday morning when it was found imprudent to convey him to his home in Shasta. He was taken to the home of his daughter instead.
